Truckers and air cargo operators maintain schedules to and from Mexico

Despite the World Health Organisation having raised the swine flu pandemic alert to level 5, it seems to be business as usual for air cargo operators and truckers. Sharon Gill reports ...

With cases of swine flu being reported in a number of countries, France has called for a European Union ban on flights to Mexico.

However, according to Airwise, the EU's Executive Commission said it had no power to restrict travel from its 27 member nations. While individual EU countries may restrict or suspend flights, the Commission cannot impose an EU-wide ban.

Interestingly, France's idea is a one-way ban on flights into Mexico. No-one is quite sure if France has thought this one through. In order for planes to fly out of Mexico, they would need to fly into the country first.

While French Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot plans to ask EU counterparts at a meeting today to suspend flights to but not from Mexico, she concedes that suspending return flights could be counter-productive because passengers would be forced find other ways of leaving Mexico, which would make it more difficult to trace individual journeys.

Bloomberg reports that a number of tour operators have cancelled flights to some Mexico destinations, but airfreight operators have been quiet on the issue, with the only statement coming from FedEx CEO Fred Smith, saying that while the company is maintaining its flight schedules, it remains prepared to take whatever precautions necessary.

IATA works closely with WHO, and is constantly assessing the situation and reviewing advice to member airlines.

The American Trucking Association is aware that US-Mexico cross-border trucking operations could be impacted by certain government decisions, but WHO has not yet recommended regular travel restrictions or the closure of Mexican borders. Login or register to post comments
