Hanjin Shipping reports lower earnings on higher volumes and revenue

Hanjin Shipping has announced that operating income for the first half of 2006 dropped 81.2%, although revenue was up 0.8% and container volumes were up 17.6%.

(8/14/2006)

While total sales reached KRW 2.92 trillion (H1 2005: 2.89 trillion), operating income dropped from KRW 282 billion in H1 2005 to KRW 53.1 billion in the first half of 2006. The decline is attributed to the rising bunker costs ?a knock-on effect of higher fuel prices and the appreciation of the local currency against the US dollar.

The company’s US dollar revenue rose 6.2%, driven by the steady rise in the container volume.

The Korea Won revenue increased by 0.8%, a noteworthy achievement, says Hanjin, considering a 5% appreciation of the Korean Won against the US dollar and the US dollar being the dominant currency in the company's revenue.

Container volumes reached 1.6 million TEU in the first half of the year, compared with 1.36 million TEU in the prior year period. Volume growth was 18.1% and 17.3% in Hanjin’s main trades that leave Asia for North America and Europe respectively.
