British Airways World Cargo Adds to Surcharge

Following a second consecutive week of record-high fuel prices, British Airways World Cargo joined several major airlines in raising its fuel surcharge.

British Airways will increase its fuel surcharge to 50 cents per kilogram effective Sept. 8. BA's increase is consistent with announcements earlier in the week by Martinair, Lufthansa, Cargolux and Northwest.

These increases come as the Lufthansa fuel index, a key gauge of jet fuel costs, hit a record 361 on August 19 topping the previous high of 346 on August 12. A 100 in the Lufthansa index equals 53.4 cents per gallon.

"The market remains under intense pressure from climbing fuel costs, which directly impact the costs of providing air freight," said Keith Packer, senior vice president commercial at BA World Cargo. "It is regrettable but necessary for our fuel surcharge to be increased at this time in line with our fuel index."

BA World Cargo is the twelfth largest cargo airline based on total freight tonne-kilometers flown, according to Air Cargo World's list of 50 top air cargo carriers.

Martinair Cargo will boost its charge five cents to 50 cents per kilogram on Sept. 6. Lufthansa Cargo and Cargolux said they were raising their fuel surcharge on September 5 from 45 to 50 cents per kilo of actual freight weight.

NWA Cargo, the cargo subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, announced that effective Sept. 5, the international surcharge will increase 5 cents per kilogram for most U.S.-origin international shipments to 50 cents per kilo. The surcharge for domestic shipments will increase 2 cents to 21 cents per pound.
