title : China, India likely to heighten import barriers

Korea will likely face more trade restrictions in the form of anti-dumping and safeguard measures in China and India this year, according to the Korea International Trade Association yesterday.

"China and India are likely to impose more trade restrictions against Korea this year," said KITA, advising the government to prepare measures to cope with the situation.

Last year, Korea was placed under the most trade restrictions from China. It had 17 anti-dumping measures and one safeguard imposed from the more than 20 restrictions exercised by the Chinese government.

In addition, the country's optical fiber, cold-rolled steel, stainless steel plates and print paper were on China's watch list.

India also slapped Korea with 20 anti-dumping and four safeguard measures in 2003 in the fields of optical fiber, cold-rolled steel, batteries and synthetic fiber, according to KITA.

Last year, about 140 trade restrictions were imposed on Korean products worldwide. The United States and the European Union accounted for 26 and 12, respectively.
