Korean minister, promotes benefits of investing in Korean ports

Korean Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Seung-woo Chang urged Japanese logistics companies to invest in Busan and Gwangyang ports.

As guest speaker to Seoul Japan Club breakfast meeting held on February 20th, Chang explained the government policy and business potential of Busan and Gwangyang port.

Korea is concentrating its efforts on the rapid development of Busan Port and Gwangyang Port as super-size container ports to serve as a logistics hub in the Pacific Rim.

Currently, Busan Port is geared up with 21 berths of container terminals. As of 2000, it handled 4.54 million TEU of container cargo to rank 3rd in the world, following Hong Kong and Singapore. However, since the present capacity alone is not sufficient to handle the rapidly increasing container cargo volume, Korea launched a development project of Busan New Port in 1995.

Under the Busan New Port project, 30-berth container terminals will be developed by 2011. To begin with, a 3-berth terminal is scheduled to be developed by 2005 for operation from January 2006. And then, three or more berths are planned to be added to the development project after 2006.

In addition, Gwangyang Port has also been developed since 1987 and is now under operation and handles a rapidly growing container cargo volume. By 2003, an additional 4-berth terminal is expected to be completed, which will develop Gwangyang Port into a 33-berth super-scale container terminal port by 2011.

Chang commented that, with ripening of the Korea-Japan FTA, the Japanese investments to Korean ports would create a win-win situation of Japanese companies cutting international logistics costs while Korean ports thriving as logistics hub of Northeast Asia.

The participants of Seoul Japan Club included twenty or so Japanese companies stationed in Korea, including Mr. Yano Mashide the CEO of Mitsubishi Korea, Mr. Hashimoto Yoshihiro, the CEO of Mitsui Korea.
