What is required for Pusan New Port scheduled to open in 2006 to become one of the top leading container terminals in the world? Mr. Lee Jung-ook, president of the Korea Maritime Institute, reported several observations on how Pusan New Port is growing as a top-level container terminal in a conference hosted by the Pusan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the afternoon of Oct 15. He stated that Pusan New Port needs to build itself up quickly to face sudden changes in the world logistic environment. He also noted that shipping companies have turned to direct callings at Chinese ports due to the rapidly growing Chinese economy, instead of keeping routes that connect through Singapore, HongKong, Kaohsiung, Pusan and Kobe. This indicates that shipping companies are giving up transshipments through Pusan, he added. Mr. Lee commented that Pusan has to open new container terminals and some berths earlier than scheduled. Shanghai is completing four berths in its container terminal in 2 years in order to deal with skyrocketing cargoes there. Pusan also needs more cranes to improve productivity per berth and to settle yard automation and 24-hour operation. Transshipment cargoes really need to have high transshipment costs reduced by building transport systems between terminals. As stevedoring costs would be the most important factor to decide on the competitiveness of Pusan New Port, the terminal has to be built with less money considering the construction cost for stevedoring facilities.
