Korean Air gets new 747 freighter

NEW YORK — Korean Air Cargo on Friday will take delivery of its 11th 747-400 freighter from Boeing.

The new aircraft will be the first of three 747-400 ERFs (extended-range freighters) in the Korean Air fleet, according to Ken Choi, senior vice president, cargo. The other two are scheduled for delivery in November and March, Choi said in an interview Wednesday.

By the time it accepts the last of the new freighters, Korean Air will have a total of 20 all-cargo aircraft in its fleet. Besides the 747-400s, it also has three 747-200s and four leased MD-11 freighters. It plans to return two of the MD-11s next year and the other two in 2005.

Choi also hinted that the airline could announce more acquisitions at the Paris Air Show next week.

The carrier is also considering the possibility of converting some of its older 747-400 passenger planes to freighters once Boeing launches a conversion program. The manufacturer has not yet reached a decision on when it will do that. The first 747-400 passenger planes were introduced in the late 1980s.

Korean Air is also considering the possibility of leasing more 747 freighters. It already has a long-term contract with Atlas Air for one 747 and leases one or two others from Atlas during the peak season.

Korean Air plans to operate 58 trans-Pacific freighter flights a week by the end of this year, Choi said.
